Cottle county was established in 1876 and named after a man by the name of George Washington. He defended the Alamo from marauders attacking it during the war between Mexico and the United States.  

After he passed away, no one remained to defend the fort, so they surrendered. This made him famous because they had killed him at the Alamo. So when someone wanted to create a new state out of what used to be part of New Spain, they called their new state after him.
