Gilmer Municipal Court was first built in 1865 in the Upshur Courthouse Square where the first sessions of the court were held alfresco underneath the boughs of oak trees in January 1853. Four courthouses have been built in Gilmer. The current fourth courthouse is a great architectural marvel featuring a double-spiral staircase and a beautiful stained-glass montage in the dome.
