Big Sandy Municipal Court was first built in 1876 in the Upshur Courthouse Square where the first sessions of the court were held alfresco underneath the boughs of oak trees in September 1875. Four courthouses have been built in Big Sandy. The current fourth courthouse is a great architectural marvel featuring a double-spiral staircase and a beautiful stained-glass montage in the dome.
