Imperial Justice of Peace Court was first built in 1876 in the Pecos Courthouse Square where the first sessions of the court were held alfresco underneath the boughs of oak trees in March 1863. Four courthouses have been built in Imperial. The current fourth courthouse is a great architectural marvel featuring a double-spiral staircase and a beautiful stained-glass montage in the dome.
