Alice Justice of Peace Court was first built in 1901 in the Jim Wells Courthouse Square where the first sessions of the court were held alfresco underneath the boughs of oak trees in March 1898. Four courthouses have been built in Alice. The current fourth courthouse is a great architectural marvel featuring a double-spiral staircase and a beautiful stained-glass montage in the dome.
