Columbus Justice of Peace Court I serves the residents of Colorado County, the 9th largest county in Texas state. The county falls in the third senatorial district and the 11th congressional district. As a result, it holds a very special role that makes it supported by both the Columbus district clerk and county clerk. Issues that should be filed with the county clerk or the district clerk should be strictly filed within the respective courts; luckily, the staff is friendly and will help you through the process.

The current Columbus Justice of Peace Court I judge has been in office since 2017 and has dedicated his life serving the Columbus. The courts, the district clerk, and the county clerk’s office are located in the historic Colorado County Courthouse. The Columbus Justice of Peace Court I is located on 2215 Walnut Street in the city of Columbus, the Colorado county seat.

The administration of justice in the Columbus Justice of Peace Court I is open, transparent, and open to the public. All the proceedings and acts of the court are recorded and maintained by the Colorado County Clerk’s Office.  The public can access the record online or by mailing the county clerk’s office located at Colorado County Courthouse. The requests are made by creating a written statement indicating a request for the records, the case number, and requisite application fees in a stamped self-addressed envelope. For more information about court proceedings, visit the court’s official site.

Columbus Justice of Peace Court I was first built in 1862 in the Colorado Courthouse Square where the first sessions of the court were held alfresco underneath the boughs of oak trees in December 1919. Four courthouses have been built in Columbus. The current fourth courthouse is a great architectural marvel featuring a double-spiral staircase and a beautiful stained-glass montage in the dome. You can call 979-732-2734 or fax 979-732-3022 to the court during office hours to get more information.
