Alto Municipal Court serves the residents of Cherokee County, the 239th largest county in Texas state. The county falls in the third senatorial district and the 11th congressional district. As a result, it holds a very special role that makes it supported by both the Alto district clerk and county clerk. Alto Municipal Court was first built in 1864 in the Cherokee Courthouse Square where the first sessions of the court were held alfresco underneath the boughs of oak trees in September 1857. Four courthouses have been built in Alto. The current fourth courthouse is a great architectural marvel featuring a double-spiral staircase and a beautiful stained-glass montage in the dome.
