Elgin Municipal Court serves the residents of Bastrop County, the 93th largest county in Texas state. The county falls in the third senatorial district and the 11th congressional district. As a result, it holds a very special role that makes it supported by both the Elgin district clerk and county clerk. Elgin Municipal Court was first built in 1870 in the Bastrop Courthouse Square where the first sessions of the court were held alfresco underneath the boughs of oak trees in January 1873. Four courthouses have been built in Elgin. The current fourth courthouse is a great architectural marvel featuring a double-spiral staircase and a beautiful stained-glass montage in the dome.
