Elgin Justice of Peace Court was first built in 1910 in the Bastrop Courthouse Square where the first sessions of the court were held alfresco underneath the boughs of oak trees in January 1919. Four courthouses have been built in Elgin. The current fourth courthouse is a great architectural marvel featuring a double-spiral staircase and a beautiful stained-glass montage in the dome.
